Mission, Values & History

WiseUp (formerly known as North Shore Village) is the local face of a national movement: a consumer-driven model helping older adults stay in their homes for as long as they choose. In communities across the country, independent-minded adults have joined together to form organizations—typically called "Villages"—that help them to realize this goal. Today there are about 200 Villages nationwide, with dozens more on the horizon.

WiseUp is modeled on one of the most successful of these communities, Boston's Beacon Hill Village, which began in the 2001 and now has more than 400 members. Inspired by Beacon Hill, and driven by the need they saw in their own community, Evanston residents Libby Hill and Harriet Friedlander made the concept a reality.

Joined by a dedicated team of volunteers, WiseUp/North Shore Village incorporated as an Illinois nonprofit in 2008, received 501(c)(3) status in 2009 and officially launched in February 2010 with 129 founding members.

We provide support and connections to each other as we age, so that we can remain active, vital, and contributing members of our communities.
